A small island in the state of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis is well-known and loved amongst Brazilians but relatively unknown internationally. This is a shame because this island is full of beautiful beaches, views, nature, and history that can be enjoyed by anybody. So if you do decide to give Florianópolis a shot, here are some things we recommend doing while you’re there.

Go to the Beach

Maybe the best thing to do in Florianópolis is going to the beach, of which there are 42 over 160 kilometers of coastline on the island. The most popular beaches are Lagoinha do Leste, Naufragados, Campeche, Joaquina, Praia Mole, and Mozambique. All of them are beautiful, with white sand and stunning waters you can walk along, swim in, or relax on.

Visit the Market

In the city center, near the bus station stands the Public Market, a historic building with interesting architecture and lots of yummy food. From the stalls selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish, to the restaurants serving local dishes, to the bands playing Brazilian music, the experience is always lively.

Hike to Lagoinha do Leste

Trust us: you don’t want to leave Florianópolis without hiking to Lagoinha do Leste, which is a beach that can only be reached by walking. But it’s well worth it, being secluded and full of waterfalls, cliffs, and great views. You’ll get a super workout with a reward at the end.
