This Bright Pink Lake In Australia Is Gorgeous

It turns out that water isn’t always blue.

Australia is famous for some pretty bizarre creepy crawlies and animals, but their bodies of water happen to be unusual as well.

Off the southern coast of Western Australia sits Lake Hillier, a beautiful lake colored bubblegum pink. Although it may seem like the absolute perfect Insta opportunity, the lake is actually extremely difficult to reach. It is located on a tiny island that can only be accessed by boat or helicopter. But if you do happen to be one of the lucky ones to view this gorgeous piece of nature in person, you’ll be in awe.

Scientists suspect that a certain type of pink-colored bacteria is the most likely source of the beautiful color. However, the lake is still safe to swim in (if you can make it there) due to its very high salt content. In fact, the lake’s saltiness makes it possible to float above the surface, as you would in the Dead Sea.

Since 2017, the lake hasn’t always remained pink. Certain weather conditions and changes in climate can cause the lake to lose its pink hue.
