Like it or not, traveling is usually a bit of a mad dash. It involves getting to the airport on time, checking in, reaching your destination, unpacking, exploring, repacking, and sometimes doing it all on repeat. With so many things going on at once, it can be easy to forget the big things—never mind the little ones, when you’re trying to stuff everything in your bag.

More than a few of us have arrived home and realized that we forgot a phone charger in a hotel room, or worse—important travel documents in the safe.

If the latter rings some trauma bells, you’ll want to take note of this hack.

If you’re planning to use the hotel room safe to store passports, jewelry, cash, or other items, add in a shoe. Yes, you heard us right—just one shoe.

This way, the singular piece of footwear will serve as a reminder to check the safe before checking out. After all, you aren’t going to leave with just one shoe, are you?

We can’t promise that you won’t forget anything during your next trip, but at least the items in the safe won’t be one of them.
