This May Be the Safest Airport in the World Right Now

International air transport agency Skytrax rates airports around the world, and they just gave the first Covid-19 5-Star to Rome-Fiumicino International Airport Leonadro da Vinci. It’s the busiest airport in Italy, and apparently the safest one if you’re planning travel in this uncertain period.

Skytrax give out “Best Airports” rankings year after year. As they said in a release, the rating is based on “a combination of procedural efficiency checks, visual observation analysis and ATP sampling tests.”

Plenty of things need to be done right for an airport to get five stars. Leonardo da Vinci airport has a new 7,000-square-feet Covid testing center opened this September, easy-to-read signs in many languages, plenty of cleaning staff, and a strict policy for wearing masks.

Skytrax has a system where they give airports two-to-five stars. Two means it needs more work, three is an average mark, four stars mean “good,” while five stars are given to airports that have “very high standards of airport cleanliness and maintenance procedures.”

This year, London’s Heathrow, Nice Cote d’Azur Airport, and Malaga Airport got three stars each.
