Jordan’s capital of Amman is home to many sites of historical significance that allow you to dive into the country’s rich past. Some of the most important ones are located on the grounds of the Amman Citadel Hill, and here are three that you shouldn’t miss during your visit.
Temple of Hercules
Amman Citadel is the top tourist attraction of Jordan’s capital, and the Temple of Hercules is one of the sites that transformed it into such a huge hit. This Roman structure is actually an unfinished temple and only six columns remain. There’s also a hand-shaped stone statute on its premises, believed to be modeled after Hercules.
Jordan Archaeological Museum
Amman Citadel is the city’s most significant archeological site, so it’s only fitting for it to be home to Jordan Archaeological Museum. Its collection includes artifacts from prehistoric times to the 15th century, ranging from everyday objects to art and statues.
Umayyad Palace
This historic palace has been built during the first half of the 8th century, and you can still visit its remains. Despite the significant damage that it sustained over the years, its restored domed entrance chamber looks quite striking. It’s believed it was once used as a residence of an Umayyad official.
