With so much travel content focused on exotic locales and picture-perfect destinations, it’s easy to forget that sometimes the best parts of travel can be found in the in-between moments. Europe, in particular, is home to a number of train journeys that offer views of some truly spectacular landscapes unlike anything you’ll find in the continent’s major cities.

If you’ve got the time, traveling by train is also a great way to save money without sacrificing much comfort. Here are a few European train journeys we especially recommend.

Glacier Express

The Glacier Express links two of Switzerland’s most popular ski spots and takes passengers through a winding route of snow-covered peaks, valleys, and wild alpine forests. Reserve a window seat, order a glass of  Valais wine and enjoy watching the country’s natural beauty go by.

Venice Simplon Orient Express

Go back in time and travel through Europe in style aboard the recently resurrected Orient Express. Journeys are available between major cities all over the continent, so exactly what sites and sounds you can expect will vary depending on which route you choose.

West Highland Line

A journey through Scotland on the West Highland Line is what we’d imagine being inside a postcard would feel like. Expect beautiful views of the Highlands, lochs, and moors along a historic train route peppered with the ruins of historic castles.
