Visit the United States’ Only Tea Plantation in Charleston, SC!

When you think of the cultivation of tea, what places come to mind? You will probably think of exotic locales like East Asia and India as centers of tea production, and they are certainly the places where you will find the most plantations. However, did you know that there is a single tea plantation in the United States which culatives its own crop?

Located in the southeast city of Charleston, South Carolina is a spot known as the Charleston Tea Garden, the only recognized tea plantation in the United States.

On Wadmalaw Island, west of downtown Charleston, a spot of land that receives the right amount of shade and rainfall along with temperatures that allow this finicky plant to grow is a top spot for tourists in this popular city.

Here, a French botanist in the 17th century discovered that tea would grow, and this is where the tradition continues to this day. Now, the plantation is free to visit and you can book tours and trolley rides through the peaceful tea farm.

Not only this, but you can also visit the Charleston Tea Garden’s shop to buy products that were grown and produced right at the farm.
