Generally speaking, the only reason that most people have heard of Hiroshima, Japan is because it was the site of the dropping of an atomic bomb during World War II in 1945. And while it’s important to remember this tragic event, the city of Hiroshima has since become a vibrant, modern city standing for peace and offering some great tourist attractions. So if you decide to visit, here is what we recommend doing while you’re there.

See the Atomic Bomb Dome

The spot where the atomic bomb detonated in 1945 is currently marked by a Ground Zero plaque behind a former exhibition hall, now in ruins and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a must-see place if you’re in Hiroshima, where you can contemplate the reality of what happened nearly 80 years ago.

Visit the Peace Memorial Museum

After visiting the A-Bomb Dome, stop by the Peace Memorial Museum to view fascinating exhibits that will help you understand the effects of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and the Japanese people. It’s incredibly touching and tragic, maybe even a bit difficult, so expect to get a little bit emotional.

Check Out Miyajima Island

One of the most picturesque parts of Hiroshima, Miyajima Island is easily accessible by boat ride and is full of beautiful green forests, stunning temples, and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets.
