Trekking through nature during our travels abroad does so much more than just improve our fitness levels. It also improves our mental health, which is why we believe everyone can benefit from it on some level. Studies have shown a correlation between a healthy mind and spending time in the wilderness, but how exactly does it work?

Reducing Negativity

A research group from Stanford University learned in 2015 that spending time in nature relaxes a certain part of brain—specifically, the part of the brain associated with mental illness. For this reason, they deduced that hiking in nature reduces our tendency to think negative thoughts.

Staying Positive

Another study from an academic journal called “Environmental Science and Technology” showed a correlation between exercising outdoors and positive energy. In addition to these positive feelings, those who spent more time in nature were shown to exhibit less tension, depression, and anger.

Improving Skills

These studies also showed that those who hike outdoors also strengthen their problem-solving skills, as well and their attention span. If all that’s not enough, seeing the beauty of nature all around us is enough to relax anyone’s mind. If you’re not convinced, why don’t you go out for a hike in the mountains and see how you feel?
