If you’re a foodie, and one who loves Italian food, chances are you’ve dreamt of traveling to Italy and reveling in the decadent flavors the country has to offer. Italy is known for specializing in a wide array of foods, but one of its main claims to fame is pasta. However, just because you’ve traveled to Italy doesn’t mean you’re going to get a truly authentic experience. Here are a few tips to make sure you get the real stuff.

Avoid Tourist Traps

The best pasta places are the mom and pop places. The ones that don’t feel the need to overcharge tourists for the same, bland, generic thing that they think tourists want. What you need to do is befriend a real Italian, and ask them where the “real authentic Italian spots” are. Chances are they’ll guide you to a place that’s completely off the beaten path.

Make Sure It’s Homemade

For the love of all things made with egg and flour, make sure the pasta you’re getting is homemade. You’d think that in Italy, you wouldn’t run into such an issue, but you’d be surprised. Remember, some stores may think they can pull a fast one over tourists, but you won’t let that happen. Make sure you get a real confirmation that the pasta you’re eating is fresh, being made by hand, and on site.
