Looking to visit popular European destinations but can’t stand the crowds? Take your time off any time from November – March and you will be rewarded with quiet streets, lower prices, and reasonably good weather. Here are our top recommendations for out-of-season European travel.

Portugal

Portugal is vibrant, welcoming, and very cheap! During the summer months, photogenic Lisbon is packed with tourists desperate to get that perfect Instagram snap. But head there off-season and you’ll be rewarded with markets bustling with locals, no queues for your daily pastel de nata and your choice of restaurants in the evening. Even the popular Algarve region in southern Portugal is quaint and quiet during winter and early Spring.

Greece

Make the mainland and islands of Greece your winter playground and you will not be disappointed. Stunning beaches and fascinating archaeological sites will be yours to explore, and you’ll be spared the sizzling summer heat. Just be aware that many hotels and businesses on the Greek islands are closed during the winter so do your research. Head to the Mani peninsular for clement winter weather and untouched natural beauty.

Italy

Whether it’s the colosseum, the canals of Venice, or the rolling hills of Tuscany that are calling your name, Italy is infinitely more lovely when not thronged with hordes of vacationers. Head to larger towns and cities, rather than more touristy destinations for a more authentic experience.
