3 of the Most Stunning Medieval Cities in Germany

Numerous cities were built in Germany during the Medieval Period. Most of them appeared near fortified castles but gained independence from the rest of the country in terms of separate laws and trade practices. Here are three of the most beautiful examples you can visit today.

Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is located in Bavaria and is well-known for impressive medieval architecture. The city was unfortunately damaged during World War II, but today it’s a great example of renovation. It was founded in 1170. The Medieval Crime and Justice Museum is our favorite place here, as it tells the darker side of history.

Goslar

Goslar is a small town settled in Harz Mountains. It’s a place where you can see many original medieval artifacts, including the Imperial Palace from the 11th century and the historical murals in it, as well as 13th century church with original stained-glass windows.

Quedlinburg

Not too far from Goslar, Quedlinburg has one of the largest collections of timber houses in Europe. The town is still in the original state, which makes it even more impressive. Fachwerkmuseum is the place where you can learn more about the architecture of this time period.
