If there is one dish for which Hungary is known internationally, it has to be goulash. This beef stew is cooked in a succulent paprika sauce that gives the meat and vegetables a rich, spicy, and delicious flavor.

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has plenty of restaurants where you can sample this national dish. However, the quality of the goulash you order ranges from unforgettably good to, well, poor.

Here are my recommendations for the three best places to try goulash in Budapest.

Hungarikum Bisztro

The best goulash that I’ve ever tried in Budapest was at this restaurant, smack dab in the city center. Hungarikum Bisztro’s goulash is delectable and as traditional as it gets. Using grandma’s recipe and local ingredients, you will never forget trying the goulash at this uber-popular restaurant.

Getto Gulyas

This restaurant, located in the Jewish Quarter of the city, serves up a great bowl of goulash. In fact, the restaurant’s name translates to “Ghetto Goulash.” Made with locally sourced ingredients, this goulash is another must-try.

Kek Rozsa

Kek Rozsa is as traditional as it gets. This inexpensive lunch spot is frequented by Hungarians and offers up goulash that’ll have you coming back for more. Want to really look like a local? Order a glass of “Bull’s Blood” wine along with your goulash. Yum!
