Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city in terms of population and third largest city in size, but it often gets overlooked as a tourist destination. Sydney brings in crowds looking to see its iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and nature-lovers flock to the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. Still, Melbourne has no shortage of attractions to offer travelers of all kinds. The city has its own rich culture, history, and some of the best coffee you’ll ever taste. Here are a few of our favorite things to do whenever we find ourselves in this part of the Land Down Under.

Royal Botanical Gardens

These stunning gardens cover 38 hectares of land across Melbourne and Cranbourne and are a must-see for those in the area. The property includes trees, gardens, lakes, and lawns year-round while other attractions such as light shows are put up seasonally.

Queen Victoria Market

Kill two birds with one stone by exploring this 140-year-old historic landmark as you simultaneously shop for food and souvenirs. The market is open five days a week and food tours are held biweekly.

National Gallery of Victoria

One of the best ways to get to know a city is through its art and this art museum in Melbourne does not disappoint. Entry to the museum is free, though special exhibitions may cost extra.
