Museum tickets don’t always come cheap, especially in major tourist hubs such as Rome. If you want to save some money on museum visits in the Italian capital, here are some of the best ways to get your hands on free tickets to top attractions.

First Sunday of the Month

All Italian state museums and archaeological sites offer free entrance first Sunday of the month, including the National Rome Museum, Galleria Borghese, Roman Forum, and the Colosseum. Keep in mind that the lines will be pretty long and that you’ll only be able to check out the permanent exhibitions this way.

Vatican Museums

A visit to Rome is incomplete if you don’t take some time to check out Vatican City, but getting into Vatican Museums isn’t an easy task. They offer free entry on the last Sunday of the month but get ready to wait for a long, long time because the lines are endless even on a regular day.

Free Museums

If you don’t feel like waiting in line for hours, you can always consider checking out some of the less popular free museums. Museo Napoleonico, Museo Hendrik Christian Andersen, Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco, and Museo Carlo Bilotti are some of the best museums you can visit without paying the entrance fee.
