From Berlin’s landmarks and club scene to the Black Forest, Germany is packed full of places to see and things to do. However, if you’re after something a little less tourist-oriented there are plenty of hidden gems that even elude some locals. Here are four lesser-known stunning spots in the European country.

Externsteine

The Externsteine, located in the Teutoburg Forest in North Rhine-Westphalia, is not only beautiful but also full of fascinating history. The Nazis placed a particular interest in the rock formation, which was used as the focus of nationalistic propaganda.

Obersee Lake

Obersee Lake in Bavaria is the hidden gem of the Alpine region. Found in Berchtesgaden National Park, close to the Austrian border, Obersee Lake is known for its picture-perfect clear waters, which reflect the surrounding mountains.

Petersberg in Bonn

Hotel Petersberg is the official guest house of the Federal Republic of Germany. This beautiful building has seen its fair share of distinguished guests, from the Clintons to Queen Elizabeth II. It is located on the Petersberg mountain, surrounded by lovely views of Bonn and the Rhine.

Benrath Palace in Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia

If you’re staying at or around Dusseldorf, don’t skip visiting the Benrath Palace just south of the city. This elegant Baroque palace houses two museums where visitors can enjoy an admirable collection of artwork, sculptures, and other artifacts of the 18th century.
