Ecuador is one of those destinations that every traveling enthusiast should have at the top of their list. It is one of the rare places on Earth where you can find mountains covered in snow, lush green forests, and beautiful beaches all at the same time. On top of that, Ecuador has a great reputation among tourists for its affordability, great climate, and friendly locals. However, before you start planning your trip to this unique country, here are some things you should know first.

You’ll Need Transit Control Card to Visit the Galápagos Islands

U.S. citizens and citizens of most other countries don’t need a visa to enter Ecuador. However, if you want to visit the famed Galápagos Islands, you’ll need to get a “transit control card.” This can be done at an airport for a fee of $20.

U.S. Dollar is the Official Currency

Speaking about money, all you need is the U.S. dollar, which has been the official currency of Ecuador since 2000. If you have some other currency, like Euro or Pounds, you can easily exchange them in banks. You can use credit cards in major cities, but cash is often the only form of payment accepted in rural areas.

You Might Experience Altitude Sickness

Ecuador’s capital Quito is at a much higher altitude than many visitors are accustomed to. For this reason, you might experience altitude sickness when you get there. It usually manifests itself in the form of nausea, headaches, and insomnia. But don’t worry, as you will get accustomed to these conditions in a couple of days tops.

Don’t Drink Tap Water

You can use tap water to brush your teeth or wash your face, but avoid drinking it at all costs if you don’t want to develop stomach illness. Instead, buy bottled water that is safe to drink and actually quite affordable.
