Flores is a gorgeous town in Guatemala with more history than you could possible imagine. Here are five sites you need to visit if you are backpacking through the Americas.

Tikal

Tikal is the largest Mayan site in the world. Here you can admire the ancient Kingdom and visit the impressive Temple IV.

Ruins of Uaxactún

Here you will find the ancient pyramids and temples of the Mayan world. At sunrise, the sun appears to rise out of the central temple, so set your alarm for super early.

Ixpanpajul Natural Park

Ixpanpajul is just 15 minutes from Flores and you can arrange pick-up services from the city easily. Once you get to the park, you will be faced with dense jungles and a zip-line through the forest.

Yaxhá

This large Mayan ceremonial city was once home to 20,000 people. You can easily spend a whole day admiring the area and checking out the ancient buildings and acropolises.

The zoo in Flores is a genuine rehabilitation center. If you love animals but dislike zoos, you can view the lovely animals at Petencito Zoo, who are recuperating before being released back into the wild.
