Traveling the world is an exciting experience, one that everyone deserves to enjoy at one time in their lives. For some of us, the rewards of traveling can be tainted by anxiety or chronic mental health issues. If you are nervous about how your mental health will hold up when you are traveling, here are some tips on how you can maximize self-care while you are enjoying the wonders of the world.

Travel With a Friend

If you are nervous about traveling alone, bring along a friend that you trust. Traveling with someone that you know will look out for you is an important part of feeling safe and reassured on your trip.

Eat Properly

At times, it can be difficult to get your three meals a day when you are bouncing between cities and new landscapes. Nonetheless, it is important to look after your body and make sure you are giving it the nutrients it needs. Living off sticky buns and ramen for a month is tempting, but it will affect your mental clarity. Get your five a day if you can.

Sleep Soundly

OK, this one may not always be realistic when you are away. Sometimes, staying in a party hostel is part of the fun. Although getting a good night’s sleep every day may be a tall order, allow yourself the option of a good night’s sleep if you need it. Find out where the nearest homestay or hotel is within your budget so that if you do need a couple of nights to reestablish routine, you can easily escape to somewhere quiet and comfortable.

Find Your Sanctuary

One tip that I have found useful over the years is to create my own safe space when I arrive somewhere new. While I am exploring the city, I keep one eye open for a park or a cozy cafe – anywhere that I know I can escape to for peace of mind if things get too overwhelming.

Keep Active

Traveling usually involves a lot of walking but if you are someone who uses the gym to keep sharp, you may want to find other ways to exercise. Sometimes, this may mean setting an alarm to get up early and go for a swim or go for a run. Bring your gym kit just in case.
