African Safari: Who Are The Elusive “Big Five”?

If you’ve been on or know someone who has been on an African safari, you have likely heard of the “big five”. These are the five animals that are most challenging to find on foot. The term was originally coined by hunters, who consider the list to be of the most impressive animals to successfully hunt. Nowadays, the “big five” is generally considered to be a list of the most impressively beautiful animals to spot on a safari.

Leopard

Leopards are notoriously difficult to spot due to their stealthy behavior and spotted coat. They are the smallest of the big five and are hunted by the African lion.

African Lion

The African Lion is a majestic creature. The male lions are characterized by their impressive mane only unlike The Lion King, lions are not born into the position of alpha.

African Elephant

The African Elephant is the largest of the Big Five. They are comprised of two groups: the African bush elephant and the smaller African forest elephant.

African Buffalo

Buffalos are impressive creatures with aggressive behaviors. If you spot a buffalo, it is best to keep clear. Even lions are at risk of being killed if they hunt these horned creatures.

Rhinoceroses

Finally, the black rhino and white rhino are sought out on an African safari. The magnificent creatures grow up to five feet long and weigh up to 7,000 lbs. They are incredibly dangerous, especially to humans.
