One of the most common worries that a couple expecting their first baby thinks about is, “Will we ever be able to travel again?” This is especially true if the couple happens to be well-seasoned travelers. They’re obviously excited about their new prospective baby, but they wonder how it will affect their travels in the future. When the baby comes, they may wonder when it’s okay to take their baby on a big trip. So can you travel with a baby, and if so, at what point in time?

Definitely Not For a While

To put it bluntly, don’t expect to travel any time soon when that baby comes. In their infantile stages, they probably aren’t going anywhere, so don’t even try to reason your way out of this one. And you probably want to take some time to regain your strength at the beginning phases of having a baby as well.

Gradually

As they start to get older and stronger—say around six months old—you can start to consider taking them on short trips. They may not be able to take 13-hour flights, but babies around this age should be just fine taking a plane for two hours, or a road trip—anything light and easy.

When they get to the year mark, you can start to finally try out some longer means of travel., but it’s important to remember that you have to deal with a baby on that long flight, as well as everyone around. Make sure both your baby and you can handle traveling for that long. Having a baby means modifying some travel you might’ve done by yourself or with your partner. It’s time to be smart about your traveling choices because it’s not about you anymore. It’s about doing what’s best for your kid.
