Islands are serene and beautiful enough, but if you really want to feel like you’re going back in time to a bygone age, why not visit a car-free island? Most islands are small enough to walk or bike around, and the lack of motorized vehicles will mean less air and noise pollution. Treat yourself to a truly relaxing break, by visiting one of the three islands listed here.

Hydra, Greece

A day trip away from Athens, this stunning island was famously the home of the Canadian poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen. It’s easy to see why he was attracted to this jewel of a place. Hike on the old footpaths, which lead to ancient monasteries, secluded coves, and tiny hamlets. Swim all around the coastline, the water is crystal clear. In the evenings, head to Hydra town for fresh seafood, salad, and cold beer.

Sark, Channel Islands

Situated between England and France is the tiny island of Sark. With a population of around 500, you can be certain that true peace and solitude await you on the island. Cars are banned, so get around on foot or by bike. Explore the twisting trails which follow the coast, or cross the island (it’s just over two miles wide, so it won’t take you long). Stay up late to make the most of the dark skies, on Sark star gazing is a serious past time.

Porquerolles

Just a ten minute boat trip from the mainland, this French island is a tale of two halves. In the south, expect to see steep cliffs and the churning sea below. In the north, there are white sand beaches and azure blue water, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Don’t neglect the middle of the island, this is where plenty of fresh produce is grown. Restaurants around the island will serve some of this produce to you, accompanied with seafood just out of the sea.

For a true taste of island life, opt for one that is car-free. Locals and tourists alike will be more friendly and relaxed, as the rush of the modern day-to-day is replaced by an easy, carefree attitude to life.
