Across Europe, castles loom out of woodlands and cling to the sides of mountains, providing a sense of an enchanted landscape. Whilst countries such as Scotland, Germany, and Spain can boast of many fine castles, France is one of the top destinations for seeking a real-life fairytale. If you’re interested in checking out some French chateaus, here are three of the best.

Mont St Michel

If there’s anything more magical than a castle, it’s a castle rising straight out of the sea (although technically, the monumental structure on top of this island was intended as an abbey, rather than a castle). This popular destination in northern France is Instagram-famous for a reason. It’s a 50-minute walk from the beach to the island (taken along a safe wooden path), or arrive in style in a horse-drawn carriage!

Carcassonne

Giving its name to a famous board game, this stunning castle is one of the most intact examples of a medieval fortress still standing in Europe. Climb the hill from the old town, and enter through the huge stone gates. You can pay for a full tour of the castle, walk around the battlements, or simply enjoy the views of it from the medieval town which sits within the castle gates. Everything here is well set up for tourism, you will find everything from knights in armour entertaining visitors, to authentic restaurants serving traditional food such as cassoulet, a rich duck and bean stew.

Château de Pierrefonds

Situated only 50 miles from Paris, this castle is worth a day trip from the capital. It dates from the 14th century, although it has been renovated since then. A popular location for filming, this castle offers visitors a lake situated within its grounds, and the Forest of Compiègne just outside, so if you tire of exploring the castle there are other options nearby.

Castles inspire us with their history, grandeur, and beauty. Across France, there are many castles to visit and explore, but the three listed here are some of the best.
