In the United States, tipping at restaurants, hotels, and taxis is so commonplace that it’s pretty much a part of the culture. Still, not every country feels that way. Here are some countries where it may be better for you not to be overly generous.

Australia

While Australians are not strangers to tipping, it certainly isn’t a common practice there. While tipping around 10% in restaurants is not unheard of, tipping taxi drivers is pretty much nonexistent.

Czech Republic

Although tipping is not practiced among locals, this European country sees so much tourism that there is a growing expectation for tourists to leave a little extra at hotels. Still, tipping is generally limited to tourist hotspots such as Prague.

Singapore

Not only is tipping discouraged in Singapore but it’s outlawed. This means no service charges at restaurants or for taxis. Still, tipping bellboys in hotels is viewed as acceptable.

Congratulations if you have picked New Zealand as your next trip destination. It is one of the most unique places on Earth and a dream for any serious traveler. But before you actually get on that plane, there are some things you should know about the country.

You Need to Pay a Fee to Enter New Zealand

U.S. citizens don’t require a visa to visit New Zealand. However, you’ll be required to pay the Electronic Travel Authorization fee. This document allows travelers from visa-exempt countries to enter. It costs 23 New Zealand Dollars ($13.63) and needs to be secured prior to your arrival through the official government website.

Don’t Expect Good and Free Internet Everywhere

Major cities in New Zealand offer great internet speeds, but you’ll need to make an effort to find free access to it. Remote areas, on the other hand, are known to have slow internet and low cell signal coverage.

Sunscreen is a Must

Sun can be really harsh in New Zealand and quickly get you if you are not careful enough. Even if there are some clouds in the sky, getting sunburns is a possibility, so you’ll need to make sure to apply enough sunscreen to protect your skin.

People Drive on the Left in New Zealand

Like most British colonies, New Zealand also uses a left-hand traffic system. Keep this in mind if you are planning to rent a car while there.

Famous for its immense mountains that rise vertically from the fiord, Milford Sound is one of the most popular tourist destinations in New Zealand. With its remote setting and varied habitats, it is also home to some incredible animals.

Keas

Keas are alpine parrots found in mountainous regions of the South Island of New Zealand. They are famous for their cheeky personalities, and they can be found interacting with tourists on the Milford Sound Highway which leads to the fiord. They are also known to attack the rubber on cars so bear this in mind if you stop to see one!

Fiordland Crested Penguins

Fiordland Crested Penguins are found only in Fiordland and as an endangered species, they are one of the rarest penguins in the world. Best seen from a Milford Sound cruise, they are identifiable through their orange beak and bright blonde feathers on the side of their head.

Fur Seals

Fur seals are a regular at Milford Sound as they reside there all year round. They are also best seen from a cruise, as the boat takes you past Seal Rock, where fur seals like to bask in the sun. Having been endangered in the 19th century, they are thankfully now making a recovery.

Mount Sunday

Mount Sunday is about a three hour’s drive from Christchurch and was used as the location to film scenes of ‘Edoras’, the capital of Rohan. Mount Sunday stands out sitting above the flat Canterbury plains and made the perfect backdrop for the city of Edoras.

Mount Ngauruhoe
