Hawaii is full of volcanoes – some that are dormant and others that aren’t. The Mauna Loa is considered to be one of the most active volcanoes, but that doesn’t stop it from being a tourist destination.

It erupted in the 1800s and has been known to produce massive flows of lava, but it hasn’t erupted since, so it’s still quite safe to visit it. Plus, the star-filled skies are definitely one of the highlights of this beautiful volcano. Still not convinced that this active volcano is worth visiting? Read on to hear more about it.

They Recorded a Podcast Here

For the podcast The Habitat, a few handpicked scientists were left to live in a simulation of Mars environment for a whole year. Their Mars-like habitat was built at Mauna Loa. The podcast is an interesting listen and describes the conditions of the area and how the people felt there. It’s worth checking out too.

Great Sunsets

It’s worth flying from Honolulu to Hilo and then to South Kona for a great view of the volcano. There’s an observatory access road where you can watch the view from and you might be even able to witness the lava flowing from the volcano’s mouth with the backdrop of the sunset.
