Overnight trains, also known as sleeper trains, have recently been making a comeback in the U.S., but they have been a longtime feature in other countries in the world. These trains are popular because they allow passengers to board the train, get some sleep, and wake up in the morning when they have already covered great distances or even arrived at their destination. Also, there is a financial element to it as overnight trains are usually cheaper than flying.

However, in order to have a great overnight train experience, you should take note of these essential tips.

Pay a Little Extra for a Proper Bed

The sleeping arrangements on overnight trains can vary depending on which company provides them and in which country you are boarding. However, in most countries, you will be able to pick between cabins with proper beds and cabins with beds made by modifying seats. Make sure you pick out the former even if it costs a bit extra because your sleep will thank you.

Think About a Single Cabin

If you are looking to save money and don’t mind the company of strangers, then booking a shared cabin is fine. However, you will probably have an easier sleep and be a lot more comfortable if you pick a single cabin. The difference in price isn’t that significant, but single cabins make all the difference.

Bring Earplugs

Speaking about sleep, get some earplugs. Trains are noisy, and there is always some commotion going on that guarantees to wake you even if you are a fairly firm sleeper.

Don’t Forget to Set Your Alarm

With some exceptions, trains are usually on point with their arrivals. So make sure to check out the schedule and see at which time the train arrives at your station so you can set your alarm to wake you up. Sure, the train staff might wake you up to inform you that you need to get off, but we wouldn’t rely on it.

Get Comfortable

Most importantly, get comfortable for your overnight train journey. Wear comfy clothes, bring your pajamas, and have some snacks nearby. Embrace the experience and have fun.
