Greece is a beautiful country in the Mediterranean comprised of over 200 islands surrounding the mainland and the capital of Athens. It has a rich history and culture with no shortage of sites to see, and as you explore, no shortage of amazing meals to try. Greek food is delicious and full of unique elements you won’t find anywhere else. The region is awash with fresh ingredients and cooks who know how to do them justice. Indulge with one of many takes on fried cheese, or expand your palette and try moussaka. You can’t go wrong with any of these dishes you’ll find in Greece.

Moussaka

Not for the faint of heart, moussaka is a dish composed of ground beef cooked in a tomato sauce, covered in bechamel cream, and topped with fried eggplant. It’s on the heavy side and sometimes also topped with potatoes. We love it, but be prepared to take a nap after indulging in this popular Greek meal.

Spanakopita

Great for vegetarians, spanakopita is a Greek spinach pie made with phyllo dough and feta cheese. It’s savory while still being light enough to enjoy as an afternoon snack. It’s also served as an appetizer.

Tirokrokets

Like mozzarella sticks, but more cultured. Tirokrokets are a type of fried cheese ball usually made with three different types of cheese. They’re often served as an appetizer and dipped in tzatziki, which is a Greek yogurt-based dip. Who could resist such golden goodness?
