With its beautiful canals, scenic bike routes, and laid-back culture, there are numerous reasons to visit Amsterdam. Another is most certainly the food! If you’re spending some time in the Dutch capital, these are things you definitely have to taste.

Stroopwafel

It doesn’t get more Dutch than this classic waffle. Crispy on the outside with a delicious caramel filling, stroopwafels go back all the way to the 1800s. Although they can be incredibly plain, some places sell stroopwafels that are dipped in chocolate and covered in toppings.

Patat

If you thought the French (or Americans) had the monopoly on fries, welcome to The Netherlands. Here, fries are served in paper cones and come with a variety of sauces from mayonnaise to peanut satay which is part of the Indonesian influence.

Krokette

Crispy and crunchy, krokette are deep-fried heaven. A mixture of meat and potato, these babies are molded into an oblong shape, covered in breadcrumbs, and deep-fried. Yes, please.

Poffertjes

Poffertjes are the Dutch version of pancakes. Small and cute, they resemble English crumpets and are often dusted with powdered sugar, drizzled with syrup, or topped with Nutella.
