Running the length of Zambia and Tanzania are the rail tracks that Tazara Railway follows. This unique railway connects Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania and Kapiri Mposhi, Zambia. If you’ve dreamed of seeing Southern Africa by rail, then this is the trip you have to take.

Good to Know

You can choose to start in Zambia or Tanzania, but most travelers prefer to finish in Dar Es Salaam, where you can then take a ferry or flight to Zanzibar for some beach time.

The train does not operate daily but instead operates twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. Don’t rely on the timetable, though, because this train often runs late. You can expect to spend anywhere from two to four days on the train if you travel from start to finish without jumping off.

There are also different classes, which offer various levels of comfort. If you’re planning to do this trip, be aware that there is no air conditioning and you should bring some food with you.

While it may not be the most comfortable of rides, it does give travelers a unique look into the geography of the region. You will see the ocean, grasslands, and if you’re really lucky, some elephants roaming in the distance.
