If you’re planning a trip to Europe in the fall but Oktoberfest-style outings aren’t what you’re looking for, know that plenty of places have much to offer in terms of seasonal activities that don’t center so much around drinking alcohol. Amsterdam is one of our favorite European cities any time of year, but the charm of the city is even more apparent in autumn when the leaves start to change and the air turns crisp. Whether you’re traveling with children or just prefer a quieter scene, here are some fun and festive ways to enjoy the season in Amsterdam.

Rent a Boat

Sure, you don’t technically have to wait for fall to do this, but it’s definitely our favorite time of year and one of the best ways to enjoy the natural beauty within the city. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon sailing through the canals as the changing leaves provide a beautiful seasonal backdrop.

Dungeon Amsterdam

This tourist attraction is also open for visitors year round, but it’s much more fun in October when the dungeon is redecorated to be extra spooky. It’s not recommended for children under 10, so consider skipping this one if you’ve got younger kids.

Hortus Botanicus

While the gardens at Hortus Botanicus are mostly outdoors, there are some indoor greenhouses for plants requiring warmer temperatures. It’s a great place to go on those crisp fall days where it’s just a bit too chilly to stay outside for too long.
