As much fun as it is to travel around the world, it can also be pretty dang expensive. But hey, when you’re on vacation, what is money anyway? While it’s true that the value of money takes a slight backseat when you’re in your “travel headspace”, it’s still good to consider budgeting so as not to completely break the bank. Here’s one tip that’ll actually save you a ton of cash.

Don’t Be a Tourist

For most of the biggest tourist destinations in the world, the locals who live there know their hometown is a tourist destination. For this reason, there are so many attractions that are marketed specifically to tourists. And guess what? The prices are jacked up as a result. If you go to a foreign city and just allow things to “happen”, you’ll probably be unknowingly guided by locals towards the touristy restaurants and other hotspots, because it’s a big part of their economy.

However, there’s another option. Instead of being a mindless tourist, you can actually go out of your way to think like a local—and find much cheaper things as a result. You may find a cheaper restaurant that’s hidden in some random area. Or you may discover a local pool that’s not part of your expensive hotel. And hey, there’s always public transportation instead of expensive cabs. This is what it means to “live like a local”, and that’ll certainly save you a ton of money on your trip.
