British pubs are nothing like your usual bars. Unfortunately, most foreign visitors only realize this once they enter one, which is a bit too late. They are often either overwhelmed with the atmosphere or unfamiliar with etiquette, which prevents them from experiencing these places at their best.

Still, it is quite easy to have a great time at a British pub, even if you are visiting it for the first time. You just need to follow these simple tips.

Don’t Expect Table Service

Table service might be found in modern pubs, but a traditional British pub usually doesn’t have one. Instead, you or one of your friends go to a bar to order and pick up the drinks.

Order a Draught Beer

Sure, you can order something else to drink. But if you want to have a great time and really get the full experience, go with the draught beer. Take the in-house beer if they have one or a variety that is popular with the locals.

Engage with the Locals

People are a big part of the draw that British pubs have. The locals are usually loud but goodhearted. Try to engage with them, see what they are passionate about (it is always soccer), and show some interest. If they act “hard to get,” ordering a round will surely soften them a bit.

Don’t Try Too Hard to Fit In

One of the worst things is trying too hard to fit in. Everyone will know that you are a tourist, so act like one. Get curious about things, be respectful, and soak in the experiences.
