There’s a new book titled Hotels of Pyongyang, which shows an interesting new side of North Korea’s capital. It explores the city from a new angle you probably never saw before.

Author James Scullin visited many hotels around the city and talked with the locals who work there to get material for the book. He was accompanied by photographer Nicole Reed, whose photos capture the essence of what Scullin was trying to tell us.

Scullin first visited North Korea with an approved tour group. He wanted to go back so much he started volunteering as a tour guide for similar trips and over time got to know the city of Pyongyang pretty well. Hotels fascinated him the most, because they are the only way the country uses to show local culture to travelers.

As Reed noticed, hotel cafes were the only places where she could get coffee in the city. Many similar quirks are noted in this interesting book, so grab your copy and see if Pyongyang is like you’ve imagined it or completely different.
