When it comes to flying, and airport rules of thumb, there are a large number of opinions on everything. This is especially true when it comes to the topic of how long before a flight you’re supposed to arrive at the airport. While there is a wide range of opinions, usually they can be broken down into two main philosophies: the worriers and the carefree types. So let’s get everything all out in the open. How long before a domestic flight should you arrive at the airport?

Two Hours, To Be Safe

Assuming it’s not the 4th of July or Christmas, you can probably be safe to arrive at the airport two hours before your flight. This is if you want to be extra safe. Most of the time, you’ll end up getting to your gate with at least an hour to spare. The extra padding of time is necessary for any random scenarios that may occur—and as they say, better safe than sorry.

Pushing One Hour, To Be Reckless

But if you’re the type that simply refuses to be in the airport longer than you have to, we tip our hats to you for being so bold and risky. You can probably get to the airport around an hour and a half before your flight and be good to go. Again, you’re playing with fire, but this recommendation should get you there with marginal time to spare.
