One of our favorite parts of traveling is getting to experience the foods of other cultures. We always look forward to visiting new restaurants and feel it’s one of the best ways to get to know about a place as well as establish connections with the local community. All of that said, this can be challenging if you’re someone who has food allergies, especially if you don’t speak the language spoken in your destination. Awareness is key in order to keep yourself safe and avoid eating something you shouldn’t. Here’s what you should know before traveling anywhere with food allergies.

Keep Your Medication on You

This one may sound obvious, but it’s easy to become a bit disorganized when you’re moving from place to place and living out of a suitcase. The most important thing to do when traveling anywhere is to pack adequate medication and make sure you know exactly where that medication is at all times so you can access it quickly if necessary.

Do Your Research

Depending on your allergy and your destination, you may be able to read up a bit about others’ experiences traveling in that location with a food allergy. This can be a helpful way to learn ahead of time which restaurants are able to accommodate your needs and which places are better to avoid. It’s also important to know where the nearest hospitals are in case of an emergency.

Ask for Help

If you don’t speak the language of your destination, speak with a travel agent, hotel manager, or even friend or relative in the area who does speak the language and can help with any questions surrounding translation so that everything that needs to be communicated can be.
