When most people think of Austria, one of two cities come to mind: its capital Vienna, or Salzburg, the setting of the classic 1965 film The Sound of Music. We love Vienna, but for great views of the alps and a different experience of Austrian culture, it’s worth making the trip to Salzburg in the western part of the country. While the views from Salzburg never get old, two days are generally enough to see all of the major tourist attractions. Here are the ones we suggest you don’t miss:

Sound of Music Tour

Visit Nonnberg Abbey, see the Lake District, and explore Mirabell Gardens all within one guided 4-hour tour. The tour ends at Mondsee Cathedral, and you can be sure that the drive between sites will include plenty of “Do-Re-Mi.”

See Mozart’s Birthplace or Enjoy a Concert

One of the most famous and influential musical composers in history called Salzburg home for the first part of his life, and the city continues to celebrate him to this day. His home has been turned into a museum, and concerts of his works are performed almost nightly.

Visit Hohensalzburg Fortress

This medieval fortress is probably the most recognizable landmark in Salzburg and one of the largest castles in Europe. Free quick tours are given twice daily, though tickets are available to be purchased for more in-depth tours as well.
