Inside Freetown Christiania: Denmark’s Anarchist Community

Inside Denmark’s capital sits a small community where anything goes. One minute you are by Copenhagen’s picturesque canal, and the next you are inside a Free Town that has its own rules.

When you enter, the first thing you will notice is an abundance of colorful street art. There are hundreds of bright and bold murals on every possible rule. The art tumbles off the walls and into the street, so at times it feels like you are walking through an outdoor gallery.

Violence is absolutely prohibited in the community, but marijuana use is encouraged. If you walk down “Pusher Street,” you will see many stalls selling bags of the green drug — and it’s totally legal there.

It used to be the case that you could not take photos in the community, for obvious reasons. Now though, respectful photos are encouraged, which means the wonderful art the locals have created can be shared.

There are also lots of little markets inside the town, where you can buy everything from pipes to funky shirts and souvenirs. At night, the cafes transform into music venues, and you can enjoy a whole host of talents from jazz to DJ sets.
