Italy ranks high on the list of romantic destinations, and now it has even more right to the claim. While Venice, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast are all wonderful places to venture to with your partner, we recommend that you take a trip to the Via dell’Amore.

The picturesque pedestrian path translates to the Way of Love. Found between the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola, the Via dell’Amore is a 1-kilometer walkway that hugs the coast.

The romantic name comes from the reason that the trail was considered a private spot for lovers from the two towns to meet. Yet, the trail was the location of tragedy and heartache 11 years ago.

In September 2012, a landslide resulted in 4 people being injured. The tourists hailed from Australia and required rescue by helicopter due to life-threatening injuries.

The tragic event forced the closure of the famous walkway, but more than a decade later, it is set to re-open.

The Via dell’Amore has undergone renovation to lengthen the rock protection arcade, install safety fencing, and make way for a tram to and from the roadway.

Visitors can already check out the first section of the hiking route until September 30th, with the path scheduled to reopen fully in July of next year.
