When planning a trip across Europe, not many people have Lithuania at the top of their bucket lists. Yet, the Baltic country is rich in history and culture. From religious landmarks to charming old cities, these are three reasons to visit Lithuania.

Vilnius Old Town

Considering that Vilnius harbors the main airport, you will most likely find yourself in the city at some point. While you are there, make sure to visit the capital’s old town. Lined with narrow, cobblestoned streets, the UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts landmarks like the Vilnius Cathedral, Gediminas’ Tower, and the Gate of Dawn.

Curonian Spit

Situated on the Baltic Sea coast, the oddly-named Curonian Spit is a narrow peninsula shared by Lithuania and Russia. Fishing villages can be found amid sand dunes and pine forests, while nature lovers can explore the area’s National Park.

Lithuanian Cuisine

It is said that if you truly want to get a sense of people, try their food. Potatoes are a big part of Lithuanian cuisine, so be sure to taste the potato pudding known as kugelis, and cepelinai which are potato dumplings filled with meat or cheese. Šaltibarščiai, a beetroot soup served cold, is popular in summertime.
