Mount Ngauruhoe
Serving as “Mount Doom” in the films, this beautiful mountain is found in Tongariro National Park. Not only can you enjoy the sublime scenery and feel like you’re tracking through Mordor, but the region also has one of the best day walks in the country.
Canterbury
Constructed on a hill with a sheer drop at one end was the set for Edoras, the town of Rohan. Despite taking nine months to build, the set is no longer standing. However, you can still enjoy the magic of the place and drive right up to it.
Matamata
The lush green landscapes around the town of Matamata served as the calm and peaceful Shire. The set was rebuilt for making the Hobbit movies and still stands there today. The location is now a tourist attraction.
Waiau River
This magical river represented the River Anduin in the movies while the surrounding rocky landscape depicts the scenery around Rivendell.
