Oaxaca may not be the first city you think of when someone mentions Mexico, but you won’t be disappointed if you decide to check it out. Architecture lovers will feel right at home in this city because its religious buildings happen to be great examples of Mexico’s Baroque architecture.

Church of Santo Domingo

One of Oaxaca’s top landmarks, this baroque building is known for its opulent interior, but it’s more than just any ordinary church. One of the former monasteries within this historic complex was turned into the Cultural Centre of Oaxaca, which features an impressive collection of pre-Columbian artifacts.

Oaxaca Cathedral

It took two centuries before this building finally opened its doors in 1733, due to frequent earthquakes in the area, but it was worth the wait. Filled with Baroque pieces and treasures, Oaxaca Cathedral is now one of the city’s most important religious buildings and it’s worth exploring both inside and out.

Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Soledad

Earthquakes are a common occurrence in Oaxaca, but this building was built to survive them. Its low spires and towers are its first line of defense against frequent natural disasters, but it’s also well known for its Baroque-style pipe organ and ornate décor.
