When people visit the UK, they often head straight for London if they are seeking culture, excitement, and buzz. Whilst the capital is a fantastic place to find all of these things, they can be found in other parts of the country. Often referred to as the UK’s ‘second city’, Manchester is a dynamic northern city with plenty of soul. An active student population keeps the city youthful and energised, whilst art galleries and museums add a healthy dose of cultural interest. Finally, the food is second to none as it is possible to eat cuisines from every part of the world, all whilst staying in one city. Here are some recommendations of things to see and do in Manchester.
HOME Art Gallery and Theatre
Although Manchester is fantastic, it is undeniably rainy. HOME provides the perfect all-in-one destination, as it has a cinema, theatre, art gallery and high-quality restaurant. If you need to treat yourself, book in for a meal and a film. The menu is all about taste and quality, choose from freshly grilled meats and cheese with delicious salads, a wide range of burgers or pizzas with a gluten-free base available.
The Whitworth Museum
Free entry into this recently refurbished museum space is undeniably an excellent deal. It houses over 55,000 works of art and was named Best Emerging Cultural Destination in Europe. It is part of the complex of the University of Manchester, so is fairly central within the city and accessible from major bus routes.
The Shops
If you are into serious shopping, Manchester will cater for you. It houses the UK’s largest city-centre shopping area, with over 240 retailers. From the budget-friendly Primark to the sophistication of Selfridges, every shopper will be satisfied.
