Most people skip visiting Canberra while exploring Australia because it’s not one of its most bustling cities, but there’s more to it than meets to eye. Its natural beauty knows no bounds and here are three amazing spots that you should visit if you’re a passionate animal lover.

National Zoo & Aquarium

Zoos are usually the most popular attraction with animal lovers visiting pretty much any city and Canberra is home to its own. The National Zoo & Aquarium covers almost 50 acres and it offers an aquarium, breeding programs for endangered species, a zoo with endemic species, and native animal encounters.

Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve

If you’re not a huge fan of zoos and enjoy animal-themed attractions with a more authentic feel, the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve will be your cup of tea. This protected area is home to kangaroos, platypus, koalas, and other native species that you can observe in their natural habitat while exploring Tidbinbilla’s many walking trails.

National Dinosaur Museum

You won’t run into any live animals at this museum, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting, especially for younger visitors. Its Australia’s largest permanent display of prehistoric specimens, with an impressive collection of fossils, but most visitors come here to explore its garden with life-like dinosaur models.

Orangutans are one of the most beautiful and beloved animals on the planet. While they can be seen at zoos around the world, there are only two places where you can still see them in the wild: the southeast Asia islands of Borneo and Sumatra. These critically endangered great apes are highly protected, but there are still ways to see them in their natural habitats. Check out this guide to see where to go on these two islands in order to do so.

Sumatra

Sumatra is the home to around 14,000 wild orangutans, most of which are located in the northern part of the island. If you want to see them in their natural habitat, the best place to head to is Gunung Leuser National Park, just next to the town of Bukit Lawang. Orangutan tours set up by locals are your best shot to see these animals in the wild.

Borneo

The Malaysian state of Sabah is the best place to see orangutans on the island of Borneo, as the majority of the island’s population of the animal resides here. Your best shot is on a three or four-day tour of the Kinabatangan River, where orangutans like to hang out on the banks. You can also try the Danum Valley and the Deramakot Forest Reserve, accessible by tours.

Have you ever seen a red panda before? This animal, based on my scientific judgments to be one of the cutest ones in the world, is a rare sight both in nature and the wild. Its Himalayan natural habitat in Asia is hard to access, but fortunately for us, there are a handful of American zoos that are known for their red pandas. Check out these three zoos in the United States where you can see this animal in the flesh.

Zoo Knoxville (Knoxville, Tennessee)

While it might seem surprising, Zoo Knoxville in the small southern city of Knoxville, Tennessee is arguably the best place in the world to see red pandas. This zoo, which has a highly successful red panda breeding program, currently also features four cute cubs on display.

Smithsonian National Zoo (Washington, DC)

This Washington, DC zoo, which features free admission, is also a great place in the United States to see the red panda. A female named Asa lives in the Asia Trail habitat and can often be seen playing and eating bamboo shoots.

Prospect Park Zoo (Brooklyn, NY)

In fall 2019, the Prospect Park Zoo was fortunate enough to see their red panda, Willow, give birth to a couple of male red pandas which are now a favorite at this Brooklyn establishment. These three are playful and energetic, unless it’s cold outside, seeing them revert to semi-hibernation!

Have you ever seen an alligator before? These slithery reptiles are one of the most famous animals that can be found in the southern United States, tending to reside in delta and swamp environments with calm water and warm temperatures. While big and scary-looking, these animals can be observed in the wild and do not pose any danger if you don’t move towards them aggressively. Here are three places in the U.S. where you can catch a sight of these creatures in the wild.

Everglades National Park (Florida)

Arguably the most famous place to see alligators in the United States is in Everglades National Park in South Florida, offering boating, hiking, and camping to visitors. This swamp environment brims with alligators, who can often be seen poking their heads out of the water as they stalk their prey.

Mobile-Tensaw River Delta (Alabama)

Alligators can also be found in Alabama, specifically in the vast delta region of Mobile-Tensaw which is a great place to take your boat out for a ride. Keep your eyes out for alligators, which can often be found hanging around plants where they can be partially camouflaged.

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge (Georgia)

The Okefenokee Swamp is protected in south George in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and is another spot where alligators abound. These wetlands are accessible by boat and have been unchanged for thousands of years, providing an optimal virgin environment for these magical creatures to thrive.

Penguins are most commonly associated with Antarctica and other polar destinations, but did you know that they can also be spotted in South Africa? That’s right, the African continent is home to a significant colony of penguins that can be found in its southernmost country.

If you are planning a trip to South Africa and want to spend time up-and-close with these adorable animals, add these spots to your list of places to visit!

Boulders Beach

Just outside of the big city of Cape Town is a small beach that happens to host a colony of over 3,000 African penguins. This beautiful beach, surrounded by granite boulders, is a place where the penguins can be seen and observed up close and personal, but always with respect.

Stony Point

Betty’s Bay is a small town in the Western Cape province of South Africa which is known for the Stony Point Nature Reserve, an especially great place to see these little birds. A protected conservation area for penguins, you’ll be able to see a large number of these birds and your $1.50 entrance fee will go towards protecting them.

Dassen Island

A few miles off of the South African mainland and an hour or so north of Cape Town is Dassen Island, a nature reserve which can be visited by boat as part of a private trip. If you’re lucky enough to go, you’ll be able to observe a breeding colony of African penguins in their natural habitat.

Do you love dogs and coffee? Well, I have the perfect place for you.

The Dog Cafe, located in Los Angeles, California in the United States, is the world’s first dog cafe. This coffee shop, which gives humans the chance to go into a place where they can get a coffee and interact with dogs, is my idea of heaven.

The mission of The Dog Cafe is to give adoptable dogs a chance to be seen by humans in an environment that isn’t an animal shelter. According to the owners of the coffee shop, this allows people to have the chance to fall in love with a dog and to see it in a natural environment where its true personality will shine.

It costs $10 per person per hour to gain access to the cafe, where you will be given a complimentary drink upon entrance.

If you’re lucky, you might even have a chance to cuddle with one of the cafe’s furry friends or to feed one of them a treat of its own!

You owe it to yourself to check out this excellent place if you find yourself in Los Angeles. It’s located at 240 N. Virgil Avenue. Have fun!
