If you follow any travel bloggers on Instagram, there’s a good chance you’ve come across some stunning pictures of a sunrise over a valley peppered with colorful hot air balloons. This popular spot is Cappadocia, a region in central Turkey. About four hours by car outside the capital of Ankara, Cappadocia is famous for its cave and rock formations. It’s a truly unique and breathtaking site to see and no pictures can do it justice. Here are some of our favorite things to do whenever we’re in the region:

Hot Air Balloon Rides

Rise with the sun and take in the view on a hot air balloon ride. There are numerous companies that offer flights, but they usually require advanced booking and fill up quickly. If you’re planning a trip to the region, hot air ballooning should be at the top of your list.

Visit the Goreme Open Air Museum

Ancient caves and paintings abound at this outdoor museum. It’s best to go through with a tour guide who can explain the history of each location and artifact in a way that does them justice.

Lover’s Hill

This is where most of the iconic photos of Cappadocia are taken. It’s a vista like no other and the best place to be for anyone for whom photography is an important part of travel.

Cappadocia is a historic region of Turkey, set in central Anatolia, surrounded by the towns of Ürgüp, Göreme, Uçhisar, Avanos, and Mustafapaşa. Its most striking feature is the “moonscape” shaped by ancient volcanic eruptions and wind erosion. This process has formed caves, pinnacles, pillars and chimneys up to 130 feet high, creating a fairytale-like landscape made of soft volcanic rock. It is a very popular tourist destination, due to its many unique geological and cultural features.

There are many hikes you can take in this area, including climbing up the Uchisar castle, the highest point of Cappadocia, from which you can see some of the best panoramic views of the area. You will get the chance to explore many caves, the most famous of them being the Underground City of Derinkuyu. Built in the 7th and 8th centuries B.C, it used to be home to 20,000 people on its 16 levels. It was inhabited until the early 20th century, but now it serves as a museum.

While in Cappadocia, you should also make time to visit the Goreme Open Air Museum. Created as a Byzantine monastic settlement in the 9th century, and later becoming a pilgrimage site in the 17th century, the complex contains more than 30 churches and chapels carved from rock. Some of them still contain intact Byzantine frescoes and other pieces of art.

One of the most popular activities that attract thousands of tourists to this place every year is the hot-air ballooning. Every day, right after sunrise, hundreds of air balloons are let out into the sky at the same time. This can be a beautiful sight to watch from terraces and rooftops of numerous cave hotels, but it’s even more magical if you experience the ride yourself. Seeing the unique scenery of Cappadocia from this vantage point is an unforgettable experience.

Are you looking for something new and unusual? Why not visit Cappadocia? This region in Turkey looks like a fairytale, and it provides a unique combination of mystery and adrenaline. Here are the top 3 things you need to do in Cappadocia.

Göreme Open-Air Museum

This splendid cluster of monastic Byzantine artistry with its rock-cut churches, chapels and monasteries is one of Turkey’s UNESCO World Heritage sites.

At first, this was an important Byzantine monastery, then a pilgrimage site from the 17th century, and now it’s one of the main attractions in Cappadocia. This is a place that must be visited!

Derinkuyu Underground City

Derinkuyu is the deepest excavated underground city in Cappadocia. A beautiful natural wonder with impressive fairy chimneys and eroded caverns, Cappadocia is an amazing geological spectacle. Extending to a depth of approximately 60 meters (200 ft), it’s large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people.

Güllüdere Vadısı (Rose Valley)

The trails that loop around Rose Valley are easily accessible for everyone and provide some of the finest fairy chimney–strewn vistas in Cappadocia. They hide fabulous and little-visited rock-cut churches boasting vibrant fresco fragments and intricate carvings hewn into the stone.
