If you’re looking to travel around the UK, using the trains can get expensive. Luckily, there are alternatives, in the form of long distance coaches. For half or sometimes a quarter of the price of a train fare, you can travel between major cities. The only downside is that going by coach is slower, and can sometimes involve leaving or arriving at unsociable hours. If you’re interested in using these coaches, here are three long distance journeys worth checking out.

Bristol to Glasgow

Travel from the southwest of England to the southwest of Scotland, all without any changes. This journey, available through companies such as Flixbus and Megabus, can take up to 13 hours, so bring plenty of snacks and entertainment. The coach seats are comfortable enough, but it’s unlikely that you’ll get a full night’s rest on board, so plan your departure and arrival times carefully.

London To Manchester

You can get coaches from pretty much any UK city to the capital, and many coaches depart from London for other major cities each day. London to Manchester via train can be expensive, crowded and noisy. The journey via coach can take five hours, but there is no need to change and the price will be at least a third cheaper than the train.

Brighton to Birmingham

Travel between these major cities with ease via Flixbus, Megabus, or the National Express. Tickets can cost from as little as $20, making the coach an easy and affordable way to see the UK.

As popular as it is for tourism, the continent of Europe also has a well-deserved reputation as being not exactly the most inexpensive place on Earth to travel. Cities like Paris, London, and Amsterdam might be fantastic places to visit, but doing things there will also cost you a pretty penny. However, not all of Europe is wallet-squeezingly expensive to visit. Here are the three capital cities in Europe which will cost you the least to visit.

Skopje, North Macedonia

The cheapest capital city to visit in Europe is Skopje, North Macedonia. This charming city of just over 500,000 has a sixth-century fortress, a stunning old town, and an emblematic stone bridge that crosses the Vardar River and serves as one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

Pristina, Kosovo

The capital of the youngest country in Europe is another fantastic budget-friendly option in the Old Continent. Ravaged by war just over 20 years ago, Pristina is now a comfortable, small capital city to visit that offers pieces of Soviet-era, Ottoman, and Bulgarian history for travelers to explore.

Podgorica, Montenegro

On the banks of the Moraca River lies Podgorica, the capital of the small Balkan country of Montenegro. Located between the region’s mountains and the Adriatic Sea, it’s easy to get lost in this charming city’s sights, including a Turkish clock tower and the city’s many impressive churches.

Saving money while traveling is always a good idea, and it’s even better if you can help the environment while doing it. While travel was once almost exclusively done in private vehicles, planes, or trains, there is an exciting new option which has gained popularity in recent years: car-sharing.

Car-sharing refers to the process of joining another private citizen in his or her car and going from point A to point B. Usually, the people who offer up their cars for trips are people who are making long trips for personal or business purposes and wanting to share costs for the ride.

It’s a perfect system for many reasons. Not only do you pay a relatively low cost to travel, but you also reduce your environmental travel footprint and have the opportunity for a more relaxed and personalized trip.

When car-sharing, people generally allow a maximum of 3 or 4 other people in the vehicle, and you’re able to enjoy the relative comfort of a passenger vehicle without having to worry about train or bus stations or airports.

Drivers are verified through companies that provide ridesharing services like Bla Bla Car, ensuring a safe ride. All you have to do is search for the itinerary that you want to cover on these websites, and you’ll almost certainly find a car-sharing option, especially if you’re traveling between two well-known places.

Traveling seems like an unattainable goal for many people because they immediately connect it to a stay at a luxury hotel overlooking the Eifel Tower or New York skyline. You don’t have to spend an entire fortune to see the world as puting a bit of money aside every month can cover these short trips.

City Break

If you make a good plan in advance, you’ll be able to explore any city in a day or two. Look for cheap flights or bus and train tickets if the city of your choice is nearby, and if you have no trouble falling asleep while traveling, consider saving some money on accommodation with an overnight ride.

Long Weekend

If one day just isn’t enough to explore an entire city, what about three or four? Take a day or two off work, merge them with your weekend, and you’ll have all the time you need at your disposal.

Road Trip

Traveling comes in many shapes and forms, and exploring nature is the most peaceful one you could possibly opt for. Fill up your tank, pack a tent and some food, and get ready to hit the road! Nothing compares to camping under a starry sky and waking up to birds chippering instead your alarm sound.
