With the new Barbie film set to be released later this year, one of the most popular trends of 2023 so far is an aesthetic referred to as “Barbiecore.” The doll’s signature pink has taken over everywhere from runways to social media, but did you know that there are actually several geographical features that have been naturally pink since before it was cool? From lakes to beaches, these blushing beauties are a must-visit for photographers or anyone looking to add a rosy touch to their social media feeds. Read on to learn more about some locations that we wouldn’t be surprised to see as part of Barbie’s dreamland.

Lake Retba, Senegal

Lake Retba, or Lac Rose, is a mesmerizing pink lake in western Senegal. Its unique color comes from a high concentration of a harmless type of algae that produces a pink pigment in response to the lake’s high salt content. Visitors can swim, take a boat tour, or try sandboarding in the surrounding dunes for a fun adventure.

Fujigoko, Japan

Fujigoko, or “Fuji Five Lakes,” is a lake-filled region at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan. The area is filled with cherry blossom trees, which, come spring, explode into a sea of pink blooms as far as the eye can see. In certain parks, there are very few other tree varieties among them, which creates the appearance of an entirely pink forest. Blossoms peak in mid-April, though the entire blooming period can last for about 4 months total.

Gili Pasir, Indonesia

Gili Pasir is a beach off the island of Lombok in Indonesia best known for its coral pink sand. It’s quite peaceful and ideal for tourists looking to swim, snorkel, or just relax and bask in the sun. As the area surrounding the beach is uninhabited and its location is fairly remote, we recommend booking a tour ahead of time to make the most of your experience.

Hutt Lagoon, Australia

Australia is apparently home to more than just one pink lake. Hutt Lagoon is another beautiful lake you can visit if you want to see these vibrant pink hues in person.

You thought Japan was the only one with cherry blossoms? Well, New York City would like to join the group chat.

Each year, thousands of people travel to the Asian island for the Sakura season when cherry blossoms begin to bloom. It is viewed as a time of renewal and optimism. Not everyone has the means to visit Japan, but NYC is entering the sakura game and is offering visitors a chance to catch the blossoms in full bloom.

The Central Park Conservancy has launched an interactive map that tracks when each area of trees is pre-peak, at peak, or post-peak bloom.

The famous park, which measures 843 acres, features 4 types of cherry trees. There is the deep pink Kwanzan, the white Yoshino, Okame which is rosy pink, and the classic Higan which is known for its combination of pink and white.

According to the map, the Okame blossoms on the west side of the reservoir have already reached their peak. You can find them along Mid-Park at 86th-96th Streets.

The Conservancy expects the other trees to bloom soon due to the warmer-than-usual weather.

Washington, DC is the capital of the United States and one of the most-visited cities in the country. Whenever spring comes around, it also turns into a place that hosts one of the most beautiful spectacles on Earth: the annual cherry blossoms.

Gifted in the early 20th century from Japan, the Tidal Basin of the city hosts hundreds of Japanese cherry trees that bloom in late March to early April of every year, turning the waterside area into a spectacle of pink and fluffy flowers.

Known worldwide for their beauty, this annual event gives ride to the National Cherry Blossom Festival that lasts from March 20th to April 10th annually, always coinciding with the opening of the flowers.

While the celebration will likely be watered down in terms of cultural events and stands this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, those who can make it to Washington will still be able to stroll around the city and enjoy the trees.

This is a perfect outdoor event that will allow you to see the city with a completely different appearance than it normally has, with the imposing monuments of the city serving as a backdrop to the gorgeous trees.

Be sure to keep an eye on the cherry blossom forecast in the coming weeks to see exactly when the trees are expected to spring to life, and try to make it to Washington in order to see the spectacle yourself!

If you ever wondered when is the perfect time to visit Japan, the answer is very simple: anytime. But there is particularly one time of the year when Japan puts on its finest attire. It is in the springtime, from March to May, when the cherry trees bloom all over the country. In Japan, this period of time is called Hanami, or also known as the Cherry blossom festival.

Hanami, a centuries-old Japanese tradition of blossom viewing has its great significance. In old times, it represented the custom of welcoming spring and enjoying the beauty of flowers, especially sakura (cherry) or ume (plum) tree flowers. Nowadays, in this busy world of ours, it gathers families and friends under one cherry tree, making them relax a bit, and spend quality time with their loved ones.

The festival dates change from place to place and from year to year and are usually determined with reference to cherry blossom. This beautiful awakening of nature symbolizes new beginnings and it is the number one attraction to the tourists.

But if for some reason, your path doesn’t take you to Japan, don’t worry! Cherry blossom festival isn’t only celebrated in Japan, but in the whole world: Taiwan, Korea, The Philippines, China, USA, Georgia, Finland, and Italy.
