For many of us, flying is viewed as the default mode of transport to our next holiday destination. What many of us don’t realize is that cruises offer travel benefits as well as experiences that cannot be substituted. Here are the main reasons why you should cruise instead of flying to your next vacation.

Your Vacation Begins As You Board

When flying, your vacation only begins once you’ve arrived at your destination. On cruises, however, the fun begins the moment you board the ship, with swimming pools, shopping, spas, and sightseeing already at your fingertips. This makes cruising a better use of your time.

Less Stress

Once you get to the airport, there is an array of security checks, passport control, and crowds to navigate, making for a stressful travel experience. By boarding a cruise ship, you no longer have to worry about such bureaucracy, allowing you to focus more on enjoying the journey.

Convenience

On a cruise, you don’t have to plan what activities to do as your itinerary is already organized for you. In addition to planning which destinations to take you to, cruise companies also plan an array of fun activities on board, including kids’ clubs, sports, music concerts, and games such as bingo.

Cruises are an incredible way to explore several destinations in one trip and enjoy some good old-fashioned rest and relaxation in the process. Like any vacation, however, there are also certain challenges that come with going on a cruise. For some, these limitations may feel like no big deal, while others may view them as major deal breakers. If you’re considering going on a cruise but aren’t quite sure it’s for you, read on to learn more about some of the pros and cons.

The Pros

Convenience:

For many people, the main benefit of going on a cruise is the convenience. Cruises allow travelers to visit multiple destinations without having to book separate accommodations or transportation for each one, and most tend to come with all-inclusive packages. Knowing that all of your meals, entertainment, and other activities are included for one price can take away stress and make budgeting easier.

Opportunities to Socialize:

Making friends as an adult can be difficult, but cruise ships are a great place to meet new people. Between the wide range of on-board amenities and daily excursions available to choose from, cruises have no shortage of opportunities for passengers to connect and bond over shared experiences.

The Cons

Tight Schedules:

Visiting multiple destinations in one trip is an advantage, but it also comes with a trade-off: limited time in each port. Not having as much time as you’d like to explore a location may make passengers feel rushed and can take away some of the fun.

Environmental Impact:

Traditional cruise ships require significant amounts of a substance called heavy fuel oil, which emits toxic smog and greenhouse gasses when burned. Beyond just coming with a massive carbon footprint, this also makes the air quality on cruise ships worse than some of the most polluted cities in the world.

Cruises are an excellent way to see the world, but there are a few cities you’ll have to leave off the list if local governments get their way.

Prior to the pandemic, a whopping 30 million people would hit the decks of cruise ships each year. Although that number has dropped to just under 5 million, it is still a significant number of tourists.

Cruises may be popular with passengers, but not all city officials feel the same. Venice implemented a ban on all cruise ships in 2021, citing pollution and damage to caused by the large vessels.

It is now expected that other major cities may follow suit.

The incumbent mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, has highlighted how thousands of disembarking passengers cause mobility issues each time a cruise docks for four to eight hours in the port. Studies have shown that these people do not actually contribute much to the local economy as food, drinks, and other items are already offered on the ships. The average spend on land comes in at a mere €23.

Amsterdam, Marseille, Santorini, and Dubrovnik have also expressed concern over the pollution caused by the cruises, with 50,000 residents of the French city having signed a petition to ban them.

Passengers set to embark on the first voyages of Carnival Cruise Line’s new liner have not been given permission to come aboard.

There are 24 vessels within Carnival Cruise’s fleet, with three more ships scheduled to join over the next two years. Carnival Jubilee was due to be the first, with the maiden voyage from Galveston, Texas expected in October 2023.

The ship, which will be the sister to Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras, will travel the Caribbean and is currently being built in Germany. It has now been announced that shipyard delays and supply chain logistics have delayed production, postponing the vessel’s debut by at least two months.

As a result, Carnival Cruise Line has been forced to cancel the first six of Jubilee’s trips.

“This is disappointing news, but with the notification from the shipyard, we are advising our guests as quickly as we can,” stated Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We appreciate their understanding as we work to deliver another spectacular ship that will provide a vacation experience our guests deserve and will absolutely love.”

Amongst the canceled voyages was the ship’s transatlantic sail from Southampton in the United Kingdom to Galveston which will serve as its home base.

Guests who booked Carnival Jubilee’s now-canceled cruises will be notified, with its debut voyage now scheduled for December 23, 2023.

Cruises are a very unique and specific way to travel and see the world, and if you’ve never been on one before, you probably are in for a lot of surprises. Here are just some of the things that you should expect when you take a cruise for the first time.

There Might Be a Dress Code

Cruises try pretty hard to maintain their reputation as a fancy way to travel, which is why many of them will have strict dress codes at mealtimes. Pack accordingly with enough evening wear to last you the length of your cruise.

There’s Probably a Laundry Room

That being said, don’t overpack! Most cruises come with laundry rooms that you can use so you don’t have to bring a gigantic suitcase on board with you. Plus, you can almost always also use a wash and fold service at a bit of a higher cost.

All-Inclusive Is Worth It

A lot of cruises are all-inclusive, though some make it optional. If you have the choice, we definitely recommend going for an all-inclusive meal and drinks plan. It will save you a lot of headaches trying to figure out where to eat while onboard, and you’ll be able to enjoy the full cruise experience.

Despite our planet and travel lives starting to lurch slowly towards normalcy after the past COVID-19 influenced year, one popular travel option and industry that has yet to get back on its feet and resume is the cruise industry. Very, very limited numbers of cruises were allowed to resume in Europe and some parts of Asia last year, but they have generally been shut down throughout the world since the pandemic began. But when might they come back?

Summer Cruisin’

With more and more people being vaccinated against the virus and countries starting to loosen restrictions, there have been talks about cruises resuming in some capacity this summer. Cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Crystal Cruises, four major players in both the North American and global cruise industry, have announced plans to bring back their voyages by July.

Requirements

By using ports in the Caribbean and in other places where there aren’t tight restrictions, passengers may be able to embark with proof of a negative COVID-19 test or vaccination. This would be a big relief to all of us who have missed cruising and visiting tropical destinations over the past year. Keep your eyes open to see if this positive development will indeed bring us back to cruises this summer!

When you think about going on a cruise, what comes to mind? You probably associate this fun vacation choice with the sun, warm weather, and beaches, which is usually true! However, if you are looking for a more natural and bare-bones experience for your next trip, why not consider a cruise in the Last Frontier?

Why You Should Do It

Alaskan cruises have grown in popularity in recent years as curious travelers have begun to discover all of the natural marvels which this northwestern US state bordering the Arctic Circle has to offer.

From glaciers to ice floes to small, charming towns on the coast, an Alaskan cruise breaks every notion of what you thought a cruise was and simultaneously offers a bevy of unique opportunities to those who choose to take one.

Where You’ll Go

A typical Alaskan cruise route leaves from Seattle, WA, or Vancouver, BC, and traces up the northwest coast to the fjords, inner passages, and glaciers of southeastern Alaska. There are often stops in cities and towns like Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan, great places to check out authentic Alaskan culture.

Would you consider taking an Alaskan cruise? This one-of-a-kind experience is sure to leave you stunned.

Cruises are a great option for a fun family vacation that allows for maximum relaxation and the opportunity to check out a number of coastal destinations. Long cruises are becoming more and more popular, with people deciding to take transoceanic voyages or even just extended voyages within one sea. However, before you embark on your first cruise that lasts more than a week, there are some things you should keep in mind. Here they are!

It’s Not Always Sunny and Warm

While you might imagine that a cruise would always feature sunny and warm weather, this isn’t the case. The temperature can dip into “chilly” territory at night and there always seem to be a couple of pop-up rain showers too. Take a rain jacket and a sweatshirt or two!

Be Prepared for Motion Sickness

Cruise ships are built to minimize the effects of the rocking of the ocean, but sometimes, the waves can have your stomach turning no matter how resistant the vessel is. Take Dramamine or another anti-nausea medicine with you in order to prevent spending time feeling sick.

Research and Plan Your Excursions Beforehand

A key part of any cruise is the excursions that you can make when the ship stops at any coastal port and gives you a day to explore. Many of these excursions, however, fill up quickly and might not be taken advantage of if you don’t plan ahead of time. Be sure to do so in order to make the best of these stops!

Cruises are a top choice for ocean-based vacations and a fun way to travel around in comfort while seeing different coastal locations.  However, the simple fact of the matter is that putting hundreds of people inside a boat can be a great vector for illnesses and sicknesses. However, there are some strategies that you can use in order to stay healthy and avoid getting sick on a cruise. Check these out and remember them the next time you leave port!

Avoid the Buffet

Cruise ships generally offer up several dining options, one of which tends to be a buffet. It can be risky business, however, to eat food and touch food handling equipment that has been in contact with all kinds of other people. It’s safest to avoid eating at the buffets.

Carry Hand Sanitizer

You will always want to sanitize your hands after touching any object which is touched by others on the ship. Hand sanitizers do a great job of eliminating any potentially harmful microbes that could get you sick.

Be Prepared for Seasickness

Not only is it easy to potentially become the victim of a virus or bacteria on a cruise ship, but it’s also easy to get seasick due to the constantly-moving waves. You can take medicine like Dramamine or simply avoid potentially nausea-triggering behaviors like reading or using a computer.
