]]>Like we said, the more people opt for eco-friendly accommodations, the greater the demand for such places becomes. New sustainable establishments begin to open up, and existing businesses take note of this shift and may switch to more responsible practices. When planning your trip, choose accommodations that use energy-efficient technologies, manage waste responsibly, and support local conservation efforts. If it falls within your budget, consider staying in a small, locally-owned B&B, as they tend to have a lower environmental impact than large chain hotels.
Transportation is one of the greatest contributors to carbon emissions within the travel industry. To minimize your impact, try to get around using public transportation, biking, or walking whenever you can. For trips that require a flight, stick with economy seating on airlines that invest in sustainable practices like incorporating more fuel-efficient planes into their fleets.
In terms of pollution, it’s been said that plastic is the new coal, and single-use plastics in particular are a major problem in many popular tourist destinations. Ditch the disposables and prioritize reusable alternatives by carrying a refillable water bottle, reusable shopping bag, and eco-friendly utensils. If you do need to use plastic, follow local recycling practices as much as possible.

]]>Obviously, the best way to reduce your carbon footprint is to avoid flying and choose greener modes of transportation such as bus or train. If you do, however, need to fly to a far-away destination, you can still reduce your carbon footprint by booking a non-stop flight, flying in economy class, and packing light.
Traveling to a foreign country is the perfect opportunity to explore local cuisine and try unique dishes. This is also a great way to make your trip more eco-friendly because you’ll be cutting the carbon footprint of your food by supporting local farmers.

]]>Most travelers probably wouldn’t be interested in volunteering during their vacation, but this is by far the best way to make a positive impact on the destination you visit. In most major cities there are organized cleanup events that tourists can join and help clean the city’s beaches and rivers.
Walking and cycling are definitely the best ways to explore the city and reduce your environmental impact. However, if exploring by foot or by bike is not an option, make sure to always use public transport instead of driving or taking a taxi, because it’s more eco-friendly.
If you’re staying in the city for more than just a day or two, chances are you’ll have some waste to recycle. Try to look up recycling options online, or ask locals where you can recycle plastics and paper.

]]>“Reducing your carbon footprint can come in many forms, and even small steps can have a significant impact,” she writes on her website.
According to Abbott, her goal with her online platform is to inspire others to take a step out of their comfort zone and consider alternative destinations and adventures.
“I think travel makes us all better citizens and helps to open minds,” she shared in an interview with Travel Awaits. “In particular, I enjoy off-the-beaten-path destinations and want to help others learn about unknown destinations.”
Abbott observes that over-tourism is becoming a real problem. “I focus on eco-friendly and responsible travel,” she explains. “With over a billion people traveling, it’s important to know where your dollars are going. A few simple steps can help to make the industry and destinations a lot more sustainable.”
Her posts include guides to Sustainable tourism in Costa Rica and Natural Remedies Using Poison Ivy.
“The last 40 years has seen tourism grow from 189 million people traveling the planet to over one billion,” writes Abbott. “That is an astounding number. By 2030, that number is expected to reach 1.8 billion.”
Her platform serves as a reminder that traveling and tourism should come from a place of mindfulness and empathy. Her message is rather poignant, especially these days.

]]>The main idea behind this building was to show how architecture can be combined with nature. Big focus was put on sustainability. The main materials that were used in construction were cement and local organic Bejuco wood, which creates a flowy pattern, alternating with segments of cement that look like waves.
The entire gallery is elevated above ground, resembling a giant tree-house. This was done to ensure that the local wildlife is not disrupted in any way. In addition to this, no trees were cut to in the process of construction.
The roof is made out of branches that let natural light come through and illuminate the entire space, creating a forest-like atmosphere. More light floods in through circular windows of varying shapes and sizes, which puncture the walls. There is also a raised walkway that leads around the gallery. These natural materials give a fresh and unique look to the structure.
Visitors must take off their shoes before stepping in, since connecting with nature is a huge part of the entire experience. They are invited to wander around and interact with the architecture and walk barefoot on the curvy floor, minding their every step.
The gallery is dedicated to exploring new ways of experiencing and creating art. It has hosted many exhibitions of some of the world’s finest visual artists, as well as multiple art programs for local children, and a multidisciplinary residency for aspiring artists, fashion designers, chefs, musicians, etc.

Pumping money to their economy will help their green growth even more. Costa Rica, some African countries, Vancouver, Stockholm, Amsterdam or Copenhagen are the best green-city options.
Well, traveling by foot or by bicycle is the safest traveling method for Mother Nature. However, unfortunately, you can’t swim across the Ocean, but you’ll be happy to know that airplane is the second eco-friendliest way of transport, right behind buses.
Always, always reduce, reuse and recycle while on road, even if the country you are visiting doesn’t practice the 3 R’s. Don’t buy plastic bags, carry around a reusable water bottle and always look out for nature: don’t break the trees and do not light fire.
