The Galápagos Islands are truly heaven on earth, and it’s difficult to decide which of the many islands you should visit first. If you’re struggling to make the right choice, checking out Bartolomé Island is always a good idea. Here are three reasons you should absolutely visit this island.

Beautiful Landscapes

Bartolomé Island covers a relatively tiny area of just 0.5 square miles, but that doesn’t stop it from being home to some of the most stunning landscapes in the archipelago. It was formed on the grounds of an extinct volcano, and its red, orange, and green volcanic formations have to be seen to be believed.

Pinnacle Rock

Speaking of Bartolomé’s stunning landscapes and unusual rock formations, it doesn’t get better than Pinnacle Rock. It’s one of the most picture-perfect attractions in all of Galápagos, formed by an eroded volcanic cone.

Impressive Biodiversity

Bartolomé’s biodiversity is as impressive as its breathtaking landscapes. In addition to being home to a small colony of Galápagos penguins, sea lions, green sea turtles, white-tipped reef sharks, rays, and many different kinds of colorful tropical fish can be found in its waters. This makes Bartolomé an extremely popular snorkeling destination.

The Galapagos is a group of volcanic islands 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador. Most known for being the location of Charles Darwin’s scientific research in the 1800s, the islands are still home to thousands of species. The islands and all of the species that inhabit them are protected by the Ecuadorian government, and after years of this protection, most of the animals no longer fear humans. While it’s best not to touch them, you can certainly spend hours just witnessing the animals in their natural habitats. It’s just one of many things we love about the Galapagos Islands. Here are some of the things we think are worth a trip:

Kicker Rock a.k.a. Sleeping Lion

This rock is actually one of the many islands in the Galapagos and is named for the way it resembles a sleeping lion. It’s considered one of the best places to go diving and perfect for seeing wildlife.

Snorkeling

Grab your wetsuit and head out with any of the local snorkeling companies for a fun day of diving. The water is inhabited by turtles, dolphins, reef sharks, and more that you can see up close and personal.

Take a Boat Tour Around the Islands

For those who don’t love swimming but still want to see all there is to see in the Galapagos, boat tours are available. You can take day trips to single islands or stretch your trip out into a week-long cruise. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of jumping dolphins from your boat.

Snorkeling is one of the best things that you can do while on vacation in the beach. Especially in tropical waters, there are tons of different things that you can see in just a short time underwater.

If you love snorkeling or if you’re looking to get into it, here are some places that you should go to explore the underwater ecosystem!

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The massive Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia is undoubtedly one of the best places on Earth to snorkel. Here, you can see clownfish and the amazing variety of colorful corals that the reef offers.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Los Cabos is on the tip of Baja California and is a great place to snorkel in warm water. Jacques Costeau once called the waters near Baja California “The World’s Aquarium” and you’ll see why when you see the huge variety of marine life here.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

The Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador might be remote, but their snorkeling is unbelievable. Reef sharks, sea turtles, and Galapagos penguins are some of the many kinds of animals that you’ll see in the waters here.

The Big Island, Hawaii, USA

The entire Hawaiian archipelago is a great place to snorkel, but the Big Island of Hawaii is definitely the best. Colorful coral species and tropical fish will jump out to you immediately in these warm, pleasant Pacific waters.

The Galápagos islands are maybe the only place in the world with so many diverse life forms that you’ll need years to see them all. But if you’re there for just a short period of time, you can still enjoy the unique experiences that the Galápagos islands has to offer.

Probably best known for the giant tortoise, it’s estimated that there are 10 different types that live on the archipelago. You can visit the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS), where you can meet some of the animals up close and learn about these endangered species.

The archipelago is home to very different and unique animals, but it’s also home to, well, penguins! The Galápagos penguin is the only penguin that lives north of the equator, and it’s the second smallest penguin species. It’s also the rarest and one of the most endangered penguins as it lives only on Galápagos. Isabela Island is one of the best places to see this rare and unique beauty.

Darwin’s finches are the bird that inspired the famous scientist to develop the principle of natural selection. They are probably one of the fastest evolving vertebrata in the world, and you can spot 13 different species in the archipelago.

Nearly 200 years after Darwin visited the Galapagos archipelago in the Pacific, it has become a desirable tourist destination. More recently, David Attenborough’s documentaries have highlighted the diversity of plant and animal species there. Here are five destinations you should definitely check out if you are inspired by nature.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is one of the main islands in the Galapagos. It caters to tourist needs and is a good place to start to get your bearings. Don’t forget to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station while you are there. The station is home to giant tortoises and other incredible reptiles, including the marine iguana. You can even see little sharks under the pier at sunset.

North Seymour

This island really showcases the magnificent plant and animal species. It is one of the smaller locations but has a wealth of birds and fascinating creatures to observe. From blue-footed boobies to the red bulging frigatebirds, this is definitely a destination not to be missed. You may even spot wolf seals if you are lucky.

Isabella

If you are looking to escape somewhere more remote – Isabella is the ideal location. It is less touristy and is home to hundreds of wild tortoises, penguins, flamingoes, marine iguanas and so many more. It is also renowned for its incredible sunset views.

Black Turtle Cove

Located in Santa Cruz, this mangrove estuary supports a hive of wildlife. You have to visit by a local dingy, due to the National Park’s strict regulations concerning eco-tourism. The cove is an ideal place to see rays, sea turtles, sea lions, and pelicans.

The Sea

Exploring the waters is a must in the Galapagos. Whether it’s sharks or sea turtles, the waters are thriving with marine life. Whatever island you visit, there will be the opportunity to swim on a tour or independently. Look out for seahorses, giant lobsters, rays and an amazing array of fish.

Located about 1,000 kilometers off of Ecuador’s western coast is a special place called the Galápagos Islands.

If you have heard of this island chain in the past, it’s probably thanks to a biologist named Charles Darwin. The “Father of Evolution” carried out much of his scientific research on these islands. Why was this?

Well, the Galápagos Islands are one of the most wildlife-rich destinations on earth. These volcanic islands are protected as a wildlife reserve due to their status as one of the most biodiverse and animal-filled places in the world.

Many unique species make their home in the Galápagos, including the largest living species of tortoise.

On the islands, one can also find animals such as sea lions, penguins, bottlenose dolphins, and unique bird species, such as the blue-footed booby. You will be amazed by the variety and sheer number of wild animals that you can find here. This is the only place in the world where many of these species can be observed.

Don’t forget that the Galápagos Islands are also stunningly beautiful. Varying greatly from island to island, the archipelago offers landscapes that vary from desert-like to tropical rain forests. The beaches are nothing to sneeze at, either!

So, if you love nature and wildlife, put the Galápagos Islands at the top of your travel list.
