A port city in northwest Belgium, Ghent is a cultural hub with lots to offer visitors. One of the coolest cities in the country, there are lots of places to go and things to see when you visit. Here are just some of the ones we most recommend.

Visit Gravensteen Castle

Right in the middle of Ghent’s city center is Gravensteen castle, something that you absolutely must see while in Ghent. Over a thousand years old, the castle has a fascinating history and can be enjoyed from both inside and outside. Plus, the view from the roof is amazing!

See the Belfry of Ghent

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Belfry of Ghent is the tallest belfry in Belgium standing at almost 300 feet high with (yet another) amazing view from the top. You can learn a lot about this historical monument from visiting, as well as admiring its grandness.

Go to the Market

Vrijdagmarkt, which translates to Friday Market, is a market held weekly on Fridays since the 12th century. With lots of stalls selling everything from food to clothes to beer, it’s a great place to eat, shop, and have a good time.

If you’re a castle dweller who enjoys exploring medieval fortifications around the world, you’ll feel right at home in Ghent. This Belgian city is home to Gravensteen, a medieval castle that will impress you with its rich history, military architecture, and amazing views.

Built between two branches of the Lys river all the way back in the 10th century, Gravensteen is commonly known as the castle of the counts. It served as the residence of the Counts of Flanders before they decided to relocate to Hof ten Walle in 1353.

The building experienced a decline after the counts left, and changed hands over the years. After serving as a court, prison, and mint, Gravensteen was converted into a cotton mill. The building was even scheduled for demolition at one point, but the city authorities jumped in to save it and started major restorative efforts at the turn of the 20th century.

Gravensteen is now open to the public, and you can explore its charming corridors, narrow tower stairs, high rooms, real battlements, and torture equipment during guided tours.

Its doors are open every day between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and it’s recommended to book your ticket in advance since it’s one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.
